I figured a trip to Houston wouldn't be complete without a trip to the beach but we didn't want to drive all the way down to Galveston so we drove the short distance to Sylvan Beach Park in La Porte which is on the Galveston Bay. The park contains two small, but nice beaches and it being a Sunday in October, we had a corner of the beach to ourselves. The weather was beautiful (around 80 degrees and partially sunny) and the birds were active. Here are a few pictures:
We then headed to a really good seafood restaurant called Monument Inn right next to the Lynchburg Ferry. After lunch, we spent a little time watching the ferry and the boat traffic.
Right near the Monument Inn is the USS Texas. We didn't take time to tour it but here is a picture from the road:
Our last stop of the day was a quiet nature sanctuary, the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary where we had hoped to see some Texas wildlife. Instead we found a flock of bluejays, many cardinal pairs, squirrels, a rabbit, and red eared slider turtles, all quite common in our own yard and home. It was still a really nice walk and the weather was beautiful.
