Many museums in the Museum District of Houston are free for part or all of Thursdays so I took advantage of that both Thursdays we were in town.
The
Museum of Fine Arts Houston is a large art museum with an extensive collection in two buildings connected by a tunnel which includes a pretty neat piece of art work itself.
They have quite a few paintings by Pablo Picasso as well as Claude Monet. Here are some highlights:
Tiger on the Watch by Jean-Léon Gérôme |
The Gust of Wind by Gustave Courbet |
Crouching Woman, Cast #5 by Auguste Rodin |
Water Lillies (Nymphéas) by Claude Monet |
The Windmill on the Onbeckende Gracht, Amersterdam by Claude Monet |
The Japanese Footbridge at Giverny by Claude Monet (his eyesight was failing by the time he painted this one) |
Woman with a Large Hat by Pablo Picasso |
Two Women in Front of a Window by Pablo Picasso (some say the one on the right may not actually be a woman but instead a self-portrait of Picasso) |
The Rower by Pablo Picasso |
Bust of a Woman by Pablo Picasso |
Across the street is the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden and here are photos of a few pieces from that sculpture garden:
While I was in the area, I also stopped at the
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston which is always free. It is a small museum with currently three exhibits. For the price it was definitely worth walking through. Here is a photo of the museum and my favorite piece of art from this museum:

A Static and Pattern Painting by Susie Rosmarin |
The last museum I visited was the
Holocaust Museum Houston. It is a fairly small museum but took me over 2 hours to go through it as it is packed with interesting information and personal stories of survivors. I am really glad I took the time to visit this museum.
