Exotic Western Caribbean Cruise–Day 6–Belize City, Belize–August 22, 2013

We got up early this morning to get ready for our first and only excursion:  Land Rover & Cave Expedition.  This was an incredible expedition and by the look on my husband’s face throughout I am confident he feels the same.

Belize City is along the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere.  The water along the shore and around the Reef is very shallow.  Thus the cruise ship had to anchor and shuttle us to and from the port on tenders.  Here are some pictures as we arrived and tenders started arriving to pick us up.

Now on to our amazing excursion.

We were met at the pier and split into two groups.  Our group boarded another boat.  After a short ride in the Caribbean where we spotted a dolphin, we headed into the river.  The banks were lined with mangroves.  We kept our eyes open for birds, crocodiles, and iguanas.

Next was a bathroom and water break before taking the driver’s seat in Land Rovers.  Where we were docked there was a group of bats and the flowers were so pretty.

We did some serious off-roading.  We were paired up with two women who were adventurous and let my husband do all of the driving.  Our Land Rover was a right hand drive diesel and a stick shift that had 4 Hi and 4 Lo.  Paul really handled it well and impressed our fellow travel mates.  As the path was quite rough many of the pictures didn’t turn out the best but they still show you what we went through.DSC_0103DSC_0109DSC_0114DSC_0168DSC_0177DSC_0185DSC_0186

In these last two pictures the water was deep enough that it actually came in through the cracks in the doors and filled the area by our feet.  It sounds like it had rained a bit lately.

Next we crossed a suspension bridge which swung far too much for my liking and we followed a path through the jungle to the cave.  The cave wasn’t your typical US cave.  It was not underground.  We actually had to climb up to get to it so it was quite warm.  There was also no sign of tourism (lights, hand-railings and walkways, etc.).  They handed us a flashlight and we all followed our tour guides into a dark cave.  There were a few parts where we had squat, crawl, or climb over things.  It was an interesting cave.

After caving we had a break for rum punch and fruit before an hour ride back to the port.  I dragged my husband through a few shops before we hopped on a tender and headed back to the ship.

Tonight was elegant night and so we dressed up and enjoyed a great dinner.  We decided to enjoy a low key night in the room.  I finished the bottle of wine started at dinner the night before and my husband grabbed some candy from Cherry on the Top.
