The first colors of light can often be seen about an hour before sunrise and they are usually the most beautiful before the sun actually rises above the horizon. So we set the alarm early and stepped outside our hotel about 5:45 a.m. to a very cool morning (about 42*F). The moon was out and the sky was still very dark but we didn't have to walk far before we turned around and saw the first glimpses of light to the east. The day before I had picked out a nice spot in the marina to capture silhouettes of the sailboats as the colors of the morning changed. So I set up my tripod and didn't have to wait long.

By the time the sun had risen, we were frozen through and so headed back to the hotel to warm up. After a leisure breakfast, we packed up and checked out of the hotel. We made one last stop as we drove through Biloxi at the fishing pier (which like most piers is in tatters and closed - the birds are making good use of the remains).
Laughing Gulls (mostly towards the front) and Royal Terns (orange beaks) covered the remains of the fishing pier |
