Our trip has come to an end and so we headed out this morning, stopping first at a Big Boy in Battle Creek. My husband had fond memories of dining at Big Boys in Wisconsin when they used to be here. Unfortunately, the experience wasn't all that positive. My husband did enjoy his burger but the salad bar was pretty bad and there were not any other options for me with my limited diet.
We then stopped off at Lawton Ridge Winery in Kalamazoo for a wine tasting. I really enjoyed their wines and walked out with six bottles. The weather is a bit milder than Wisconsin such that they are able to grow chardonnay grapes, among other varieties you don't find in Wisconsin. There are a ton of wineries in southwestern Michigan. Someday I will need to come back to try more.
From there, we headed home, hoping to miss Chicago rush hour (which we did).
The drive was about 6 hours of drive time from our home to Detroit.
Total miles traveled - 895
Average mpg - 39.6
Vehicle - 2014 TDI Beetle Convertible
At our final fill up in the Milwaukee area, we experienced the frustration of having to wait for a diesel pump. This gas station had, I believe 16 pumps, 4 of which had both a gas and diesel pump. All 4 pumps with diesel were being used by cars that take gas. Plenty of other pumps were open. If your vehicle does not take diesel, please do not take the pumps with diesel unless the others are taken.
Diesel prices varied from $1.89 to $2.96 in Michigan. It seemed that the stations right off interstate were around $2.10 as compared to stations in more rural areas or further in Detroit were closer to $3. We couldn't figure out the reason why.
Another interesting tidbit about driving in Detroit. They don't allow left turns on a divided highway in general. Instead you go straight through the intersection and make a U-turn in the designated spot, sometimes with a traffic light to help you.
