Railroad Park, Birmingham, AL

With the spread of COVID-19, we haven't had the opportunity to travel at all recently, so we have had to stay close to home.  We walked over to Railroad Park twice in the last two weeks.

Here are a few photos from last weekend (May 16).  On the weekends, they close off 1st Avenue South for about half a mile to give pedestrians more space and bring in a few pop up vendors.  The call this the Parkside Trail which ends at Railroad Park.

Here are some photos from this morning.  Even though it was a bit steamy and warm already at 8:30 a.m., the walk was so worth it as we were treated to a yellow-crowned night heron eating breakfast!

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Check out the size of this crayfish he caught!

He spent a lot of time crunching with his beak after removing the claws.

After crunching it, he swallowed the body of the crayfish whole!

He saved a claw for last.

On another note, they planted beautiful flowers around our apartment building.  I figured here is as good as any place to share a few photos of them.
