Some of the best places to visit are so close to your home. The Horicon Marsh is one such area for us and this time of year with all the migrating birds, is a fantastic time to visit. We usually try to go the weekend before or after their big bird festival. And this weekend was ideal with temperatures in the mid 70s, sun, and very low humidity.
We started on the Wisconsin portion with a hike on the Bachhuber Loop and ventured into a portion of the Quick's Point Loop. Then we headed to the federal portion to check out our favorite boardwalk off the auto loop. Unfortunately, the boardwalk was under construction and that marsh had been drained to kill off invasive koi. They don't anticipate it being open until Spring of 2017.
Anyway, on to the photos.
There were more geese than we could count and as they were protecting young ones, they were not too friendly. On one occasion, my husband ran past one that was hissing and chasing him.
We always enjoy the tree swallows that are abundant in the Horicon Marsh
This was a new creature at the marsh.
Robins are an often ignored but interesting bird.
Red-winged blackbirds were also very abundant.
We caught a snake by surprise sunning itself on the path. It moved pretty fast so I didn't get much of a picture of it.
I believe these are double-crested cormorants.
This is an American Coot.
This is the closest we got to a great blue heron.
The painted turtles were out and about enjoying the sun. As you can see, they didn't seem bothered by other birds.
We saw quite a few pelicans.
We caught glimpses of muskrats throughout our hike.
A few more great blue herons.
Here is a yellow warbler.
I always enjoy the American goldfinches.
Look closely for the yellow warbler.
This is the boardwalk on the federal side that is always a favorite of ours. As you can see the marsh had been drained and the boardwalk didn't go very far. We will have to check back next spring when they fill it back up again and fix the boardwalk.
These last ones are for my husband who wants to share what great mileage Madreana, my Veloster got on this trip.
